Exporing The Seven Sisters……

Most of my friends, I find are ignorant about the north eastern part of our country comprising of the beautiful states of Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram,Nagaland, Sikkim & Tripura.These states with a rich culture,picturesque valleys,captivating waterfalls,mighty rivers and rich flora and fauna are together known as the seven sisters.What I have observed as I came across people through all these years living in different places is that the North East part is an unknown land,a place where there are only jungles,wild animals and terrorists.Thanks to the media,people know of Assam because there occurs an annual phenomenon called flood and the activities of terrorists.Why I say media,because Assam is in the news only when there is a flood or some terrorists carries out their bomb blasts.The media does not show other social events or cultural events that goes on in the North East.But if there is Hasya Kabi Sammelan in some place say Jhumritallaiya then that will be a story in the media.If the media gives an exposure to the people about the North East then it will change the ignorant views about the easternmost part of India.(I’ll tell you I have friends who do not know whether Shillong is a state or capital,one says Assam is the capital of Shillong!!!) .Of late the media has started giving attention to the seven sisters,that’s good.

Coming back to the main point, I intend to make the educated ignorants know about the north east through my blog.This will be the first in series and this time I start with the GEOGRAPHY.So that people will not ask my nationality when I say I am from Assam,it happened with me twice or thrice.The description will be short just to give an idea of where exactly is northeast on the map.I do not want someone to say Tripura is in south India again.Lets get started then.I'll be ready with the geography lessons in a couple of days.
